Rose Cottage is located one block north of Main Street, in
the historic district of Fredericksburg. The home’s classic Craftsman features
have been pristinely preserved: long leaf pine floors, all original wood
casements on windows and doors, and built in dining room buffet. While your
hosts kept the historic nature of Rose Cottage intact; they also added whimsical
touches throughout. The landscaping compliments the architecture and style; and
as the name implies, roses, along with a multitude of other plants, bloom
throughout the year.
Rose Cottage is quintessentially cottage chic with a flurry
of unique decorating ideas. Enter through the living room where the walls are
petal pink. The sofa and relaxing chairs are arranged to chat or watch
television. Art throughout the house is both original work of the homeowner and
a life times worth of collecting. Wicker chairs flank a hand hewn harvest table
in the cheerful dining room. A funky wire wall piece holds an odd assortment of
mid-century pottery and topiary foundations. A vintage piece of stained glass
filters in a rainbow of color over the three large windows. Casual cottage
essentials include a chippy painted cupboard, a collection of Mc Coy pottery,
and transfer-ware plate groupings. The kitchen is at the heart of the home, with
a soothing blue ceiling and crisp white walls. The granite counter tops and pine
cabinets are original. Ready for an impromptu dinner, the kitchen is fully
equipped for light cooking with a stove, large refrigerator, dishwasher, and
microwave.
Serene green bathes the front bedroom walls. The black queen
iron bed was handmade by local artisans. Black and white accents lend a
sophisticated air. Buttery yellow walls and a black and white claw-footed tub
and shower make the bath fresh and charming. The middle bedroom is large and
airy with stylishly striped aqua and white walls. The queen sized basket weave
iron bed, also made locally, is covered in linens custom made from Homestead.
Traditional styled furniture adds a formal touch to the room. Accessible from
the bedroom or through the kitchen, the second bathroom is blue with white tile
shower. The third bedroom was originally a sleeping porch. It had been enclosed
when central air conditioning and heating were added to the entire house. The
sleeping porch is open off of the kitchen with two twin beds. The walls are
speckled with turn of the century prints of children, childhood ephemera, and a
fun collection of antique plates.
