Austin Street Retreat continues to be one of the most frequently photographed
homes in Fredericksburg. Its Fachwork log cabin and limestone walls manifest the
pioneer building techniques that make the pre-Victorian architecture of Fredericksburg
so enduring and pleasing. With an eye for premium quality including fine linens
and custom designed bedding, solid brass fixtures, superior quality whirlpools
and elegant appointments, the Retreat has grown to five suites each with a private
terrace. The yard is beautifully kept and includes many perennials from the LBJ
Ranch. The owners' love of Texas historic architecture and glamorous, comfortable
surroundings all culminate in these five suites. Located in Fredericksburg's National
Historic District, this is a premier property. The immigrant heritage and a European
sense of design and style are a natural combination which provide a truly personal
"Retreat" in the Hill Country. There are five suites�Kristin�s,
Maria�s, Eli�s, Annie�s and El Jefe�s.
Maria's Cabin - It all began around 1867 when John and Maria Walter built the
log cabin structure and began raising their family. The heritage of these pioneers
is preserved here. The walls are eighteen inches thick and built to last. The
original paint exists on the ceiling as do the original wood floor and beautiful
wavy glass in the windows. Added later, as the family grew and prospered, was
the limestone room. These two rooms are currently bedrooms. The log room contains
a queen-size cedar bark bed. In the limestone room, a queen-size cherry sleigh
bed is featured. The linens are custom designs from The Homestead. Down comforters
and ruffled shams evoke a sensual appreciation for this historic structure with
modern day luxuries. Maria would be pleasantly surprised to see that her durchgang
is now used as a cozy whirlpool room that opens onto a rock terrace. A pecan
tree is the centerpiece here and jasmine and ivy climb the walls. Relaxation
comes easily in the New Orleans wrought iron furniture.
In addition to the two bedrooms and whirlpool room, there is a powder room,
dressing room, and sitting room. Modern day conveniences include a phone, Cable
TV, radio/CD player, refrigerator, microwave, and halogen lighting.
