My favorite time of year is fast approaching. Oktoberfest is next week – October 1,2 and 3, and lots of fun things have been planned to the weekend. On Friday there will be a parade traveling around Marktplatz. It will be followed with the grand opening ceremony. Saturday morning is “Chicken Dance” time. A circle will be formed around Marktplatz and do the CHICKEN DANCE!! It will be a barrel of fun!
Someone asked me today why I loved Oktoberfest. I told her that the visitors coming to Fredericksburg are always happy and love to dance and/or listen to all of the German bands. There are some good ones too. Not only is there good dancing, but the performance of the Czech Dancers of West and Cadence Cloffers is awesome! I never tire of watching their routines. So much to do – so little time.
Anyone that tires of German music can wander the grounds to enjoy the many, many food venders – mmmmmm! There is some good eatin’ going on. Just thinking about curly fries, funnel cake, turkey drumstick and especially a German Sausage taco with sauerkraut and potato pancake…..Really, really good!!! Then it’s time to enjoy the 40 vendors – last year there was a man that sold unique beer mugs and by Sunday his supply dwindled to almost nothing. There is also good artwork on the grounds, plus jewelry or my favorite is the German clothes and accessories. Children will have a great time as there is a whole area dedicated to rides and games.
Sunshine the clown can be seen at various times during the day, and she might even paint your child’s face. Also strolling on the grounds will be two accordian players that truly enjoy their music.
Now – let’s talk about the beer – The Adelsverein and Kinderhalle have many, many choices of domestic beer everything from light to dark beers. In addition to the domestic beer there are 3 local Texas Breweries selling their beer in the KinderHalle. It’s always fun to see and taste what people in Texas are offering. Now the best (as far as I am concerned) is the German Beer Tent!! Mmmm Good! You might ask for some tips on what your tastebuds like because the German Beers are very different from what we are used to.
The only requirement to attend Oktoberfest is to enjoy the music, dancing, shopping, food and beer/wine. Leave your work and worries at home and join us for a weekend of fun.
