I have attended fairs for as long as I can remember. Growing up in New Braunfels my family was very active in the Comal County Fair, and I remember having a ton of fun with family and friends. When we moved to Fredericksburg our girls were small, and we started the tradition of taking them to our local fair. There are so many memories that are treasured and so much to do. This weekend we will be taking our 4 yr. old grandson and 2 year old granddaughter to the carnival. I can’t wait to see their delight in riding their favorite rides.
The weekend begins with the parade. If you happen to be in town on Thursday night or up and around early Friday morning, take a look at Main Street. Everyone will have their truck parked on Main Street placed to enjoy watching the parade from the bed of the truck. It is a sight to behold. The whole community shows up for this event, and it is quite long, but so much fun to see friends advertising their business or favorite organization.
One of my very favorite things to do is to look through the entries of vegetables, handwork, antiques and livestock. There is so much talent in our small towns that it is worth every minute of looking in the exhibit halls. Then of course there are the horse races! I am not a gambler, but I love to pick my horse for each race – nothing scientific just studying, looking and feeling what my “gut” has to say. It is so much fun to see your chosen horse when – even if I am not getting any money.
Every Friday evening the Fair queen and her court are chosen. These girls are all from our local schools, and probably all deserve to win. They have the opportunity to WOW the judges with their well thought answers and wit. The winners will spend the next year attending various parades in the area. It is so much fun for these girls and definitely a memory for them.
